Oversteer and Understeer
Understanding how your tyres behave at the limit is the foundation of every handling upgrade. This guide explains slip angles, oversteer, understeer, and what you can do about each.
These driving terms describe how vehicles respond when tyres approach their traction limits. Rather than suddenly skidding, tyres slip sideways at a progressive angle. This angle is called the SLIP ANGLE, and it provides drivers with warning before full control is lost.
Oversteer
Oversteer occurs when a car turns more than expected. This happens when rear tyres lose grip before front tyres during cornering, causing the rear to slide outward. The driver must apply opposite lock (counter-steer) to catch the slide.
Rear-wheel-drive vehicles are particularly susceptible to oversteer because the rear tyres must handle both cornering forces and engine torque simultaneously. This dual demand pushes the rear closer to its traction limit under power.
Unchecked oversteer creates a dangerous cycle: the smaller effective turning radius increases cornering forces further, pushing the rear tyres even closer to their limit, which worsens the oversteer until the vehicle spins completely. This condition is called Snap Oversteer or Lift-Off Oversteer.
Understeer
Understeer occurs when the front tyres approach their traction limit first, causing the vehicle to take a wider turning radius than the driver intended. The car continues towards the outside of the corner despite steering input.
Front-wheel-drive vehicles are particularly susceptible because the front tyres must handle steering, braking, and drive forces simultaneously. This combined loading means the front contact patches reach their limits sooner than the rears.
Oversteer: Rear-heavy Behaviour

Understeer: Front-heavy Behaviour

- Risk: runs off the outside of corner
Safety Comparison
Understeer is generally regarded as being safer than oversteer. If understeer occurs without correction, the result is simply a wider corner - the car runs wide. With oversteer, the rear steps out and the vehicle can spin if the driver does not react quickly enough.
This is why most modern road cars are tuned to understeer mildly: it is more predictable and recoverable for inexperienced drivers. Performance-oriented drivers and track-day enthusiasts typically prefer a more neutral balance, where neither end dominates.
How Chassis Reinforcement Helps
Understanding chassis forces and tyre slip angles is fundamental to making informed decisions about chassis reinforcement, anti-roll bar stiffness, and suspension setup.
Front-wheel-drive vehicles that understeer can often be corrected by fitting a rear strut bar and stiffer rear anti-roll bar. This stiffens the rear relative to the front, reducing the tendency for the rear to become too compliant and allowing the car to rotate more freely into corners.
Rear-wheel-drive vehicles that oversteer can be helped by front chassis reinforcement. A front strut bar keeps the nose planted and reduces front flex, which ensures the front tyres maintain better contact and can contribute more cornering force to balance the rear.
A chassis that flexes under load effectively changes the suspension geometry mid-corner. Bracing eliminates this variable, which means your suspension alignment settings remain accurate when you need them most.
The Role of Anti-Roll Bars
Anti-roll bars (sway bars) directly affect the balance between oversteer and understeer. A stiffer front ARB increases front roll stiffness, which increases understeer. A stiffer rear ARB increases rear roll stiffness, which increases oversteer (or reduces understeer on a front-wheel-drive car).
